From SC2Pod
The Queen is a defensive Zerg unit. There is no limit on the number of living Queens that can be produced. It is much slower off Creep than on it.
Lore
- Note that this lore is outdated, as the Queen now can produce some larvae, and does have some attacking abilities.
The Zerg Queen does not produce larvae, as her name might suggest, but she has earned her royal status from her ability to spawn numerous other parasitic creatures. The Queen has no natural armament of her own and since her lightly armored body leaves her vulnerable to attack, she usually stays near the central hive to watch over maturing Zerg.

History
In early builds, the Queen built all Zerg defensive buildings, but this has been moved back to the Drone. There also was a limit of one Queen per player and it could be upgraded to the Large Queen and Huge Queen, but both of these have been removed. At one time, it also could spawn Mutant Larva, which could transform into units faster than normal Larva and could walk around the map. Later, there was a limit of living Queens equal to the number of Hatcheries, Lairs and Hives that the player owns.
