Chris Sigaty wrote:Q. StarCraft II opt-ins are now available through Battle.net. Does the opt-in process mean that the start of the StarCraft II beta is imminent?A. We’re getting closer and closer to the start of our closed beta with each week that passes. Several months ago, we expanded our internal testing of the game to the entire company, and we’ve made significant progress since then. We’re looking forward to inviting external testers into the process soon, which is why we’re starting sign-ups now.
Q. What aspects of the game will be available for testing in this beta?A. As with previous betas for our real-time strategy games, the StarCraft II beta test will be multiplayer only, and players will have access to all three races --
terrans,
protoss, and
zerg -- and all of their units. We’ll include a selection of multiplayer maps, but they won’t necessarily include all of the maps that will be in the final version of the game. We’re making some great progress on the single-player campaign, but we don’t plan to do a public beta since we want to keep the story under wraps until the game’s out.
Q. Will we be able to try the new Battle.net during this beta?A. You’ll be connecting to and playing on the new Battle.net in the StarCraft II beta, and you’ll definitely have a chance to play around with a few of the new features -- but what you’ll see in the beta is really only a taste of what’s to come.
Q. What updates and changes have you made to the game recently?A. We’re constantly tweaking the gameplay and balance, and we will be all throughout the beta process, but perhaps the most visible changes have been made to the zerg. Our art team has done a polishing and iteration pass on many of the zerg unit models and structures, so players can look forward to seeing a lot more detail there. Compared to the versions you’ve seen before, the zerg units and bases now look a lot slimier and more sinister.
We’re also really looking forward to seeing testers try out the new gameplay mechanics we’ve introduced to each race, like the
proton charge for the protoss and the
MULE for the terrans that allow them to harvest
minerals faster. The zerg also have a
spawn larvae ability that gives them a new way to expand their production. We’re hoping these abilities increase the strategic tension for players and force some tough tactical decisions when managing economies and micromanaging battles.
Q. Which regions can join the StarCraft II beta test?A. Our plan is to include multiple regions and countries in the StarCraft II beta-testing process. We’ll be starting with a North American beta, where testers from the United States and Canada, as well as Australia and New Zealand will be able to join. We’ll then phase in testers in other regions such as Korea, Taiwan, and Europe as soon as we’re able to set up in those areas.
Q. Why aren’t you running StarCraft II beta simultaneously in all regions?A. It’s more efficient from a development standpoint to phase in each region one at a time. A big part of the beta test involves setting up new hardware and networking infrastructure, which is not a trivial process. If we set up one region at a time, we can more quickly address any issues we run into at the start, and take the lessons we learn from that experience to establish a smoother setup experience for the next region.
We can also implement all sorts of gameplay and balance changes, view the results, and react to what we’ve observed much more quickly in a single test environment, as opposed to getting bogged down trying to push those changes out across several test environments. Once the major issues are ironed out, we can expand the testing to additional regions. Going region by region will also put us in a better position to test localized versions of the beta.
Q. Will testers be allowed to write about the beta? Take screenshots and videos?A. Yes! Beta testers will be free to write about their experiences playing the beta as well as take screenshots or videos. We’re really looking forward to getting the game into players’ hands so we can hear their
feedback, since that will help propel us into the final stages of development and balancing. We’ve been working hard on StarCraft II, and we can’t wait to finally be able to hear what everyone has to say about it.

I didn't know Xordiah was a girl. Learn something new every day...

The new Spawning Pool looks alright, kind of miss the smaller ponds and swirling structure though.

I bet we will have beta rolling by August. Right before blizzcon 09 or right after. Either way I don't see beta being later than Sep. Which is my birthday.
Great news and it shows we are all gettng a step closer to our final goal. Playing our very own copy of SC2.

i finally updated my system profile, but Blizzard's hardware software isnt working that great!
i mean it detected my CPU clock at the correct speed of 3.0Ghz and when i pressed the send button i get in my profile 2.8Ghz!
nothing so special but it would be better if it was more accurate
and also include the video card memmory.

I posted about this bug in the thread. It's because they figure 1 GHz=2^30 Hz, not 10^9 Hz, and are sent the Hz. e.g. 3.0 GHz= 3,000,000,000 Hz, and 3,000,000,000 is sent, then they inaccurately convert that to GHz by doing 3,000,000,000/1024/1024/1024~=2.8 GHz

oh it is fair, cause we spend lots of money to buy one of their games, and you my friend (and neighbor
i am against the style Blizzard is trying to "sell" the beta as a gift, since its going to help them for free(i have said my opionion on that few weeks ago), but i totally support that idea that you have to have at least one of their game so you can show them that you really like that company and in return they are gona give you a change to take an early look in one fracking amazing game that is coming!
to sum up, find a store and buy a Starcraft Antholoy (with broodwar) its really very very cheap. and then submit for the beta if you think you have a good system
Really how about to post our system specs here just for fun?

Someone should be decapitated for that...

And mac users probably have a much better chance, the system specs are so they can choose testers with a wide variety of hardware. So being few mac users works in your favor

So my question is to Shadowie and Tiger:
What components can a person buy that will improve their overall SC2 experience, visually, speed wise, and over performance of the game?
Meaning what software/equipment (via video card) is recommended for the best SC2 experience?

...because everyone knows that we obviously know stuff that's not public knowledge, right?
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=234
That's the best we've got.
Depends on how powerful it is...see above.

I just consider you a "human search engine" that I love to use to much. That's the real answer to your question.
Last, but not least, I sent my specs to Blizzard. Is this all we can do? I read Karune's post and it seems that is all you need to do, plus, you need to click the box that shows which beta testing you are interested into.
So I was just hoping I didn't miss a step.
#25 Tiger0211
Yep, that's all. You can go to your beta profile page online to double check that it received your stats and that all boxes are checked, but that's all you need to do. They almost made it too easy.
#26 AUDIE
That's what I was worried about. It was all to easy and simple. So I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing any steps or requirements.
Thanks.

It is not a question of money neighbor but i am new to starcraft. I started to follow starcraft 2 news for two reasons.
1 i couldn't find a rts game that i could enjoy it
2 i knew that dustin browdner(the person behind C&C generals) was involved in starcraft 2 development.
so i have 2 years that i am following starcraft 2 and that's why i am saying that it is not fair. blizzard shouldn't be interested only for its ex-clients but also for its future clients.

Those required specs are pretty low. Basically any computer today except ones with integrated graphics cards should be able to run SC2 just fine based on those specs.
#30 ALEXGACK
#31 AUDIE
It should. Only problem is that it is difficult "upgrading" a laptop givin the way a laptop is built, but you should be ok if your Mac is only a year or two old. Given that it was top of the line a year to two years ago.
#32 ALEXGACK
but anyway ive been worrying recently because i thought i might not be able to get sc2...

Blizzard will send an email when Beta starts. As of now, no one will be getting any emails. Blizzard will announce when they are starting Beta and that's when you will/should/maybe not get an email.
Makes sense, no?
