Patch 9 Released (and 10!)2 years 3 weeks ago
by Tiger0211
Patch 9 has been released. Read the patch notes here. This is the first content patch of the beta. It includes the StarCraft II Editor and achievements, among other things (including an updated Battle.net interface; everything looks different). It has also been accompanied by a reset of the database.
Edit: Shortly afterward, Blizz released Patch 10, with some bug fixes, most importantly that canceled Larvae once again are destroyed instead of returned. They've also said that Select Larva also selecting eggs is a bug and will be fixed in patch 11.

I've got the patch already. Been playing around with the StarCraft II Editor (doesn't seem to be called "Galaxy Editor" anywhere...hm), and trying to make a basic TD, just to get acquainted with it. :) Once I've got it in a semi-working state I'll post it (don't expect anything good :P).
Anybody figure out how to change the build time for things yet? And the requirements? e.g. I'm trying to make the Missile Turret build in one second and not require anything.
Edit: Finally got it! In the "SCV - Build (SCV)" ability, the "(None) - Info +" Field (double click on the blank space to the right of Info +, double click Build Missile Turret, and change stuff :)).
(also Edit:) I noticed a few large changes when playing as Zerg vs the computer: units now have a "rank" (which is based, I think, on the number of kills the unit gets and, I think and hope, doesn't change its stats), "Select Larva" also selects eggs (bleh! revert please!), and canceling eggs gives you back your larva (already discovered to make an easy and super-lame 6pool 10 ling rush possible, by canceling units to get 5 larva on a hatch without a queen). Here are the ranks, from the data file (sorted by race):
Code:
UnitKillRank/Rank1_Prot=Disciple
UnitKillRank/Rank2_Prot=Mentor
UnitKillRank/Rank3_Prot=Instructor
UnitKillRank/Rank4_Prot=Master
UnitKillRank/Rank5_Prot=Executor

UnitKillRank/Rank1_Terr=Recruit
UnitKillRank/Rank2_Terr=Corporal
UnitKillRank/Rank3_Terr=Sergeant
UnitKillRank/Rank4_Terr=Captain
UnitKillRank/Rank5_Terr=Commander

UnitKillRank/Rank1_Zerg=Predator
UnitKillRank/Rank2_Zerg=Slayer
UnitKillRank/Rank3_Zerg=Ravager
UnitKillRank/Rank4_Zerg=Assassin
UnitKillRank/Rank5_Zerg=Metamorph

Interesting. Good luck with that TD game. I haven't had a chance to use the editor yet.

Is it me, or do the patch notes reveal hardly any of the actual changes? Sure, it gives an overview of the new "content", but look at all the new animations and sounds! New music, new help screens, new cursors for each race, Zerg buildings bleed when dying, Protoss buildings spark when dying, Zerg buildings move when researching, new Chrono Boost sound, new Sentry attack animation, Hellion fire is blue after Pre-Igniter, new Viking move sound, new Spire-to-Greater Spire animation, new Creep Tumor and Fleet Beacon textures, eight new team colors, new Scanner Sweep animation, a few of the units can /dance and /cheer! :D

There are even unmentioned balance changes. You can no longer cast abilities on the wire-frame building icons, which means you have to double-back to a Hatchery or Nexus to Spawn Larvae or Chrono Boost on it. Tiger already mentioned the Larva/Egg changes (which must be fixed). The F buttons are back to locking positions on the map. Force Field now has an indicator, Neural Parasite shoots faster, Creep spreads faster from Creep Tumors, Colossi can't walk over Force Fields anymore. There may be more changes...

P.S. Marines, Marauders, Thors, Zerglings, Hydralisks and Zealots are the units that can /dance and /cheer. It looks cool.

lol reading the patch notes I remember map publishing now. I still don't know if it's a good idea.

Also, why did they remove some maps from the map lineup? Any thoughts?

They removed some of the maps for 2v2 because it was outright stupid to play a 2v2 on them. Like lost temple. You could be far from your opponent or either really close air or ground wise if you spawn at certain locations. That could mean really unbalanced gameplay for certain race combinations.

Well that is only imo, I can't read their minds but that would be my best guess.

Edit: Also the Immortal nerf is really yuckish. I wish they had nerfed it in some other way. Thy already built slow but now. Eh -.-

Although come to think of it this might be a positive change in some ways. Yeah.

i'm pretty sure they removed those maps because they consider them done balancing and they want the beta testers to spend their time on other maps they aren't sure of.

has anyone seen or played on the new 2v2 maps? how are they? i've only seen incineration zone which looks pretty fun. oh and a little of coalition, or whatever it's called, the new desert one.

Worst patch so far.

PiF... I would consider this one of the BEST patches so far. They only buffed and nerfed some stuff to make it look like they weren't just working on Awards and the Galaxy Editor.

Good balance changes,
Galaxy Editor (it's awesome! <3) ,
and new maps.

Although I have to say I am not very fond of the new maps and would much rather have Metalopolis and Lost Temple. But then again, it's a beta afterall. :cool:

Yeah, I am really fond of the new maps, and it's not like Lost Temple and Metalopolis are out of the game ENTIRELY. Another thing, the Infestor seems WAY better now, and I actually like the changes to Immortals and Spine Crawlers. One thing I don't like is the Queen nerf, but I guess it makes Creep Tumors seem more important, especially since they got a hidden buff. I don't play as much Terran as I should, so I'm not quite sure where the Marauder re-buff stands. It seems pretty annoying when used against me, though... :/

I would still like to see small changes to the Ultralisk and Archon. But that's only two units, and I had a host of complaints to give before. SC2 is starting to really shape up.

P.S. I saw a lot of complaints about the Phoenix getting no buff around some other forums. I personally have no real beefs with this unit, but I see why it's not very desirable, and maybe they SHOULD change it just to make it appeal to the nay-sayers more. I expect Blizzard to do something about that, really.

The thing is, while I'm sure there are reasons to not get certain units over other units, I think all units should still be viable, even if they're not used much

Is the phoenix viable but unused? or unused and actually crap?
2 years 3 weeks ago

#13 Tiger0211 United States(us)

The Phoenix is fine, it's just situational (almost-purely anti-air), so you don't see it that often.

Here are the kill numbers required for the ranks: (it's every 5 kills)
Code:
        <UnitKillRank Text="UnitKillRank/Rank1"/>
        <UnitKillRank MinKills="5" Text="UnitKillRank/Rank2"/>
        <UnitKillRank MinKills="10" Text="UnitKillRank/Rank3"/>
        <UnitKillRank MinKills="15" Text="UnitKillRank/Rank4"/>
        <UnitKillRank MinKills="20" Text="UnitKillRank/Rank5"/>

Got myself the ghost portrait. I am liking the rewards system although there will be more release.
@ copyrightdna I played the new lava map. Its a well balanced map i guess. I have had terran both times and got 3 nukes and did some work. After they got detection i went mass vikings.

You might want to try changing the settings in File > Preferences > Video.

If my poor computer (1GB RAM) can handle the Galaxy Editor, then I believe yours can too :cool:

But as Tiger said, try tune down your video settings.
