Facebook/Battle.net Integration2 years 1 week ago
by Tiger0211
Blizzard has announced integration between Facebook and Battle.net, allowing you to easily add other Blizzard gamers who are your Facebook friends as Real ID friends on your Battle.net account. This will be coming soon to the SC2 beta test. They have also released details of Battle.net's Real ID friends feature.
Zhydaris wrote:The action taking place on the battlefield is just one part of the StarCraft II experience -- we're also working to make sure that you can easily connect, communicate, and play with your friends. To help accomplish that, the new version of Battle.net will offer integration with Facebook. This new functionality will start off by allowing you to quickly import Facebook friends into your Battle.net friends list, and additional features will be added over time. For more information, check out the official announcement.

Seriously... F**K facebook!

Am I the only one who feels that way?

Nope. There are a ton of people on the beta forums who hate it.

I'm not fond of the idea, myself. :(

I don't see a PROBLEM with it, it's just kinda unnecessary. :/

You don't like Facebook? Me neither. So ignore that this feature exists.
It's not costing you anything (not directly...yes, I know the time they spent setting this up means less time getting ready for release, but is it really gonna kill you? Besides, we have the release date now :P). So don't complain too much. :)
I think it could actually be pretty nice and useful for people who happen to have Facebook friends who play Blizz games (besides WoW).

Good move on Blizzard's part... even though I'm not particularly keen on the idea. Just because I have a facebook acct doesn't mean that i'll be auto-posting "Duskreaper achieved 'Kill 100 Carriers'!" on my wall...

Still, in this day'n'age the more social networking tools you can integrate, the better your odds of reaching potential gamers...

It's hard for me not to be annoyed with their Real ID approach. If a gamer wanted to use their real name they would. If I didn't have so strong an association and history with "Icesong" I probably would use my real name. On one hand I get it, but to me it kind of feels like a betrayal of what gamers have always been about. Sounds dramatic, I know, but it's like they're trying to socially engineer us(even more grandiose) to be more respectable, or at the least appear it. They removed chat channels, those wretched hives of scum and villainy, they're having us use our real names and they're pushing the real world into the game via avenues like this, more of which they supposedly have planned.

Look, if we still had what we used to have I wouldn't be at all bothered. All this could just be features I could or couldn't use. But they seem to be pushing social media extrana at the expense of traditional gamer modes of interaction. God, you can't even name your custom games anymore. All the personality of Battle.net and a gaming community is gone, and I have to think that's what they wanted.

I've said it around here before, but launch day of WC3 was a very exciting and memorable time because of all the people streaming in and out and all the chatter. And whenever I came back to now classic Battle.net it was with like a sense of coming home. There are regularly around 50,000 people on SC2 and yet it feels completely barren.

The idea of Real ID isn't to break down the ability to use a nickname and make you show your real name to everyone. It's that people who already know you by your real name (i.e. real life friends) can see your real name instead of your gaming nickname, and be your friend across all Blizz games.
Chat channels will be added eventually. The order they should've implemented them vs other things is up for debate, of course. (not that it matters too much, except possibly having Blizz put it up the list of priorities now or in future games)

Because of the features they've attached to real ID it isn't simply a question of whether or not you want your real name displayed. I've been and will continue to hand out my real ID to everyone I passingly know.

I remember when they first explained it and they were like "You don't go by Slayerx1153 to your friends in real life". First of all, to be grandiose again, that to me is another thing that comes off as them sneering at long-standing gamer traditions; many of us with established nick names are just as comfortable with them.

But it also shows a lack of perspective. Most of us don't work around gamers all day. Most of us would be lucky to have even one friend who games. And even if you did have a handful from my experience real life friends are the worst flakes for gaming. And usually suck. Point being that online friends are far more likely to make use of real ID features than real ones.

As for chat channels, I do believe they'll implement them at some point, but they've been asked the question five times the past few months and each time they've alternated their answer. It's frustrating that they're complicating the issue of a damn chat channel so much. And most pertinently they apparently won't be in by release so launch day will feel desolate instead of the hive of activity it should.

Ok, I can agree that the features of Real ID shouldn't be limited as they are to friends where you share your real name. But that doesn't mean Real ID doesn't have its place.
How 'bout an option when you're mutual friends (i.e. non-Real ID friends, but you each have each other on your friends list) to be friends across all Blizz games and be able to communicate across games? As for how the name does appear (so you don't have to wonder who this person is on your friends list in WoW because they use a different name than in SC2), how 'bout some sort of built-in note tell you "RandomName is your friend CoolName.CoolID from SC2", or making them appear to you as the same name wherever they are.
Adding these sorts of friends could work much like the current Real ID does, but maybe instead of email you just send a special request to their game account. You request them to be your universal friend, and Real ID is just an option to add to that to use each other's real names instead of game names.

Yet I know people from the SC scene, in real life, only by nick. I found out their names thanks to the realID crap, or by other means, but SlayerX will always be cooler than Frank. Take fighter pilots, if gamers are too low on the cool scale to matter. They have nicks and handles. Remember Top Gun? :P
AND, i have real friends I go back with for 10 years, and I still call them by their SC name. So apparently they do go by Slayer_Whatever in real life.
Come ON Blizzard!

Amen, brother. With real names, you'll have all sorts of dudes (workmates, friends of friends, schoolmates and whatever) you can't refuse but you can't play with, either, because of the difference in level. And so, the whole real ID crap is moot. Who cares I know where my friends are if I can't play them anyway?
Just my 2 cents.

seconded.
It's cool that they're trying to make the game better, but don't make the option mandatory just because a lot of people use it! A lot of people believed the earth was flat and we showed them, right? I mean it's clearly cubic. Dumbasses...
